Worms

Just for the record, I am not a worm.
But sometimes, I like to play in the dirt.
My friend, the red-haired creature and I, live in the garden with the birds and the bees, and the squirrels and the trees.

To the rest of the world, we’re a little nuts.
A little too high on life, grass seed and flowers.

To the rest of the world, we’re ambitious.
We waddle around in the dirt, digging holes and splashing in the puddles.

To the rest of the world, we’re small.
We don’t need to duck below the lily tree to plant new seedlings near its roots.

To the rest of the world, we’re adventurous.
We make a new section of the garden each year, planting fruits and veggies the neighbours have never even heard of, just to make them jealous come harvest time.

Yes, we are different. But that’s what makes us special.
That’s what makes us unique.

So just for the record, I am not a worm.
But sometimes, I like to wiggle around in the grass.

To the rest of the world, the red-haired creature and I are a little strange.
But that’s just because they don’t see the world from our side of the dirt.

To the rest of the world, we’re a little funny.
We play hide and seek by the bird bath and make faces in the water.

To the rest of the world, we’re day-dreamers.
Sometimes we arrange the flower pots by colour so it looks like a rainbow around the yard.

Yes, we are different. But that’s what makes us special.
That’s what makes us unique.

By day, we lay beneath the weeping willow, staring at the clouds.
By night, we catch fireflies and watch them shine.

But when it’s time to say goodnight, my friend picks me up and carries me inside, then tucks me in and kisses my cheek.
She whispers, “Goodnight my little worm, I love you” as I curl up beneath the covers.

And just before I fall asleep I whisper back and say, “Goodnight Mommy, I love you more” to end off another perfect day.

Yes, we are different. But that’s what makes us special.
That’s what makes us unique.
